Executive Summary
I conducted the "African American Social Justice Organizations and the Contemporary Civil Rights Agenda" study as a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The study was designed to understand organization leaders' perception of community social problems and their group's approaches to solving such problems. As I explored these topics with the 45 people who volunteered to be interviewed and surveyed, what became clear was the importance of gender norms to assessments of social problems in African American communities.
